Bathhouses have been part of gay community life in Canada for decades. They’re social spaces as much as sexual ones — a place to meet people, unwind, and spend time in an environment built for gay and bi men.
What a Bathhouse Is
A bathhouse (also called a sauna club or steam club in some cities) is a licensed adult venue where men can socialize, use sauna and steam facilities, and meet other men in a private, low-key setting. Most have a wet area (sauna, steam room, showers), a dry lounge area, private rooms or cabins, and common spaces. Some have a bar or snack counter.
What to Bring
Government ID (18+ only). Cash for lockers and room rentals. The club provides towels. Most bathhouses have condoms and lube available — don’t assume there’s a full supply; carry what you know you’ll want.
Etiquette
No means no, always. Don’t stare aggressively. Shower before using the wet facilities. No phones in the common areas — most clubs prohibit photography entirely.
Health and Safety
Condoms and lube are usually available on-site. Use them. Many Canadian bathhouses partner with local sexual health organizations. Resources: CATIE (catie.ca) for HIV and hepatitis C info; Rainbow Health Ontario (rainbowhealthontario.ca).
